My Take On It
Before deciding on which theme we wanted to go with, we searched all over the site, reading up on the stencils and how easy or hard they would be to do. I love that they offer demo videos to help you understand how to do the wall murals including a great tip for making hills. I also love that they post pictures of rooms that have been painted with the stencils to give you some ideas on how to do your project. For the record, painting the hills in the Transportation theme was not as easy as it looks in their video.
The first thing we did was paint the walls blue, for the sky. We then used a piece of chalk to outline the hills and then painted them green. You can see pictures from the first two steps in my Redecorating Thaddeus’ Bedroom Basic Paint Done post. That pretty much took us an entire weekend because we had to do two coats of each color. The next two weeks were painting the items within the transportation kit. Most items needed two to three coats of paint on them in order to get a good cover. You can see the outcome of this step in my Redecorating of Thaddeus’ Room Almost Done post. The final step we’ve done was to do all the touching up. Although the stencils stick to the walls we’ve noticed that in some areas they do not stick very well and had some areas where the paint got under the stencils. However we have textured, plaster walls, so this could be the reason for it. Here are the pictures of the outcome of redecorating Thaddeus’ room (you can click the images to see them larger)!
Overall the stencils are easy to use. They peel off and stick to the walls pretty good. However, there are some flaws to them. The bigger stencils are harder to place on the wall and get them on there straight. Because of this, you will find some bubbling of the stencil and if that is in the area by an edge you will get paint to seep through and under the stencil. There are also several stencils in the Transportation theme that have some very small areas that do not get painted. You must use a small brush in these areas otherwise you will get paint into other areas. I also had a couple of the stencils break after using them a couple of times (stars and clouds). I love that you are able to use them more than once, you definitely get your money’s worth if you are painting a big room or using the stencils several times.
