I’ve used Pack-N-Plays and Play Mats before, but I never saw a Playard, at least nothing like the Joovy Room² Ultralight! Most “Playards” (Pack-N-Plays) are rectangular and are mostly best for your child to sleep in or for babies that can’t do much other than sitting up on their own and playing with a few small toys. That is not the case for the Room² Ultralight .
Joovy is a US based company that manufactures premium family gear out of their Dallas, Texas and Orange County, California facilities. They pride themselves to produce high quality products and include extra features (i.e. car seat adapters, trays, sheets, etc.) as standard equipment to their products. About Room2 Ultralight
The Joovy Room² Ultralight takes all of the popular features of our Room² playard and eliminates the only complaint we’ve ever gotten on the Room² (too heavy). At just over 21 pounds, it’s over 30% lighter than the Room². The Ultralight is 90% as big as the Room² (it’s 9 square feet vs. 10 square feet). The difference is due to the tapered design of the side rails; the top rails are 4 inches narrower than the bottom rails. This design significantly increases the difficulty of climbing out of the playard and makes the Room² Ultralight super stable. The fact that the Ultralight uses the ground as its floorboard decreases the weight and increases stability too. It has an awesome, super comfortable memory foam mattress and a Joovy 100% brushed cotton sheet (very popular feature).
The Ultralight has two easy folding features, it can be quickly folded in half or super compact for travel. When folded in half, it takes up only 3.5 square feet of storage space… you can put it next to the wall, underneath the bed, behind the door or in a closet and it unsnaps back to full size in seconds! The Ultralight is perfect for travel; it folds into a compact size and fits right into the travel bag (included). Another clever feature is a solid 600D side panel instead of mesh; it acts as a protective curtain against wind, light and noise on one side of the playard. Positioned properly this can be a huge feature at nap/bed time. There’s a large pocket on the outer side – it’s great for storing all of the essentials! The playard and travel bag are made of durable 600D fabric.
Joovy’s Room² playards are the biggest, most durable playards on the market today. The fitted cotton sheet adds a level of comfort un-matched in the industry. Now you can have all that and more in a lighter weight, better looking playard that outperforms everything else!
When you purchase the Room² Ultralight you not only receive the nine square feet of play space, but you also receive a memory foam mattress, a 100% cotton fitted sheet, and a travel/carrying bag.
My Take On It
When the Joovy Room² Ultralight first arrived I was surprised on how heave it was, it weighs 21.25 pounds! That is a bit heavy, but once you open it up and see exactly how much room there is in it, you understand the weight. Let’s face it, it’s nine square feet! I love the fact that you get a fitted sheet with it, what other company does that with their product?
What makes this playard unique is not only how large it is, but also the fact that it actually sits on the ground instead of up in the air like most Pack-N-Plays are designed. There is plenty of room for lots of toys, bigger kids, or even more than one child.
As you can see, Thaddeus fits in the Joovy Room² Ultralight without any problems!
I wouldn’t recommend the Room² Ultralight if you are going to need to constantly set it up and take it down. It’s pretty heavy, for good reason, however not that practical for constant moving. Setting it up for a couple of nights/days while traveling is great.
Set-up was a little frustrating at first, but this was due to our own error. When you go to open the Room² Ultralight you want to make sure that you only try to fasten the two sides that are not strapped together first, otherwise you’ll never get the connection to happen. After you have the first two sides together you can then unfasten the other two sides and get them together and push down the middle. Because the Room² Ultralight playard is so large you will have to insert two memory foam mattress pieces to the mattress, this is because the mattress is longer than the playard when it is collapsed. You will also need to remove those two pieces when you completely collapse the playard. If you are putting the playard together properly (unlike we tried to at first) it only takes about 2 minutes to get it fully set up.
